David:Well, I looked over the links you sent and was very impressed. I’m pretty certain that this is a real connection. Here’s the story:

Meyer is one of 5 children from Czestochowa. (Spellings vary with documents.)

1. Harry Gershanowitz
2. Meyer (Max) Gershenowitz
3. David Gershanowitz
4. Chaje Gershanowitz
5. Ida Gershanowitz

Harrry is my grandfather. He immigrated in 1907. He and Perl Rand had 3 children, Helen, Irving, and Gertrude (Gigi). Gigi is named after her grandmother, Gittl. I’m Helen’s son. (Harry also had 2 prior children by his first wife, Esther Rothman. She died and left him with the 2 children to raise.)

Meyer as you already know had 4 children. He arrived with his sister, Chaje, also in 1907, and they went to his brother, David Gershanowitz, already here at Metropolitan Ave. You also know that on the ship manifest he gives his mother’s name as Gittl, back home.

David is the mystery brother. Just tonight (12/11) I called Gigi in Fla. She said David had a candy store in Brownsville, and that he had 2 children, Irene and Lou. Irene lived in N.Y. and went into the hat business. The family saw her. David moved to the Washington area sometime after the war. I can find no trace of him.

Chaje Gershanowitz. She married Louis Pearlman. They had several children.

Ida Gershanowitz married Max Friedman. He was in the umbrella business. They had 3 children, Gilbert, Irving, and Sam.

Below are the graves at Mt. Judah You can see that the dates may vary a little from the ones you have. On Toby’s stone the translation of the first line is: “Here lies Tova, daughter of Yitchok.” Similarly on the other it says: “Israel Meyer, son of Yitchok Moshe”

Would it be O.K. if I showed the wedding picture of Meyer to my aunt, since she remembers them? By the way, she could remember no one from Toby’s (Toba’s) side.

He also looks very much like my grandfather. Take a look below:

Harry Gershanowitz sometime between 1907 and 1914

Attached to this in my mother’s handwriting is: “Max Gershanowitz, papa’s brother”

FYI: My mother Helen married Bernard Mirsky. Two children, Jay and Howard. Each have 2 girls.

RE: Family story, found here. Yes, I saw that. I know that story, too. Meyer took custody of the children, a boy and a girl, my aunt remembered. He already had 4 children and couldn’t keep them. They went to David Gershanowitz’s son, Lou (my aunt isn’t 100% sure of the name). There, as your aunt remembered, too, they couldn’t fit in and were lost to the family. This probably occurred in the Washington / VA area, since that’s where David’s son, Lou had lived since the war.

Best regards, Howard

Ev Blustein 10/2001

Here’s the rest of what I learned from my cousin Florence Paul nee Besser, now 95. The Besser Family originated in Germany, probably lived in Zaloshin (Dzialoszyn) and Kloback. Sheine Besser nee Mandt probably came from Kalisz, near the German border. Her sister’s son was Jack Izbitsky and his sister was Helen . I don’t know the name of this sister of Sheine (the mother of Jack and Helen) Sheine’s brother (name unknown) had a daughter named Hilda Mandt . I did access the Ellis Island Records and found out that Schiene Besser (my grandmother) and Itzik Beset (my grandfather) both arrived from Chinstachow, Pietzkow (Czestochowa) on Sept. 29, 1913.

She was 46 and he was 50. They came on the Noordam from Rotterdam. I was also able to locate all but one of their children on passenger lists. (Note: see the Toba Besser story, below, for an interesting twist) The spelling of the Polish names leaves a lot to be desired and from my research, the places of origin are approximations. They never lived anywhere but NY, mainly in Brooklyn. (Regarding a note from a possible relation:) The dates for Isador Besser in Pamela’s and this Itzig Besser could indicate a common ancestor (though not in a Darwinian sense!) I’ve never heard anyone in my family speak of any contact with other Bessers in the US and I’m certain no one knew anyone in Little Rock, so I doubt this is the same individual. I did speak with Joe Besser, the actor, when I ushered on Broadway in the l940’s. He was not responsive to my inquiries and didn’t seem at all interested in family history!

Addendum 12/2004 from Ev Blustein and Iris Paul:

David: It is possible that the three males listed at same address as other Besers were the children of Jacob and Ruchla (Toll). They had three other children in addition to Florence and Helen who died during World War I before the family emigrated. I know they were sons. Florence and Helen were born so close to one another that their years of birth are often listed as identical , variously as l907or l908, so it would be possible that Leib listed as born in 1908 was also born soon after them. Dates of death would substantiate or refute the theory that these were siblings of Florence and Helen.

I really know very little about Hilda. I think that she came to the U.S. in 1938, before the invasion of Poland. Since Harold & I made the arrangements for her burial, I have a copy of her death certificate. Her father is listed as Samuel Mont. She was born in Poland on May 1, 1896 and died on Nov. 2nd or 5th, 1980.

Helen Besser remains a mystery; Ellis Island records show her age at arrival in 1909 to be 19 but it is believed she was 17 while the 1920 census record shows her to be 27. This brings her DOB somewhere between 1890 and 1893, probably 1892 and , since the records from Poland were for c 1913 she may have been omitted because she was already in the USA, although Toba is listed even though she arrived in the USA in 1907. Helen did live somewhare other than with her family for a while (working on a farm) but I don’t know where or when and this may be the most plausible explanation for her absence in the Klobuck record.

***Florence was born in Jan, 1906. When Jacob went to town in the Spring to register her he would have had to pay a fine because of the delay, so he waited until Helen was born & registered them as twins.

Mom would never talk about the deceased siblings or tell me their names. There was another daughter born after the 3 sons; the only thing she told me about her was that she had eyes like her father.

It is known by the family that Toba Besser was the first of the Bessers to come to America but no records of her trip are to be found from Ellis Island.

Other stories passed down give us some clues:

Toba’s husband, Meyer Gershonowitz, was a suitor in Czestochowa whom Toba appearently rejected. She then came to America with a family whose name was Weisskopf and lived with them as their “housekeeper”. I suspect she was more of an indentured servant, though I couldn’t prove it.

Meyer came to New York, was a more successful suitor the second time and they were married. Toba must have come before 1909 since she was the first of the Bessers to arrive and the second, Helen, came in 1909. The wedding picture we have of Toba and Meyer is dated1909-1910 but I don’t know the source or its accuracy.

From the Ellis Island data base we found:

Schoel (11) and Sure (19) Weisskopf, both female and traveling alone, came in 7/7/07 on the Noordham from Rotterdam. Czestochowa.

Conjectures and Questions

Sure Weiskopf is Toba Besser. She was sent with the Weiskopf’s 11 yr old. We know Toba was born in 1889 so the age is very close or correct. I just wonder how they managed the paperwork, but money has been known to grease the wheels of bureaucracy, and the Weisskopfs were well-off.

Meyer Gerschenowitz (sic) came to the US on 8/8/1907 with sister Chaja born 1894. Their mother was Gittle, all from Czestochowa. Going to brother (?) D (hard to read) Gerchenowitz who lived at 238 Metropolitan St in Brooklyn.

There is a Mordehc Gershonowitz arriving on Kroonland from Antwerp on 12/21/1911 age 20. Father was Leib and all are from Neustadt, the home of the Semmels?!? I cant connect Mordehc Gershonowitz or his father Lieb to our clan, though the Neustadt thing is very curious and they were there at the same time..

From Ev Blustein:

No, I never heard (or do not recall hearing) about Meyer’s siblings or parents. I do think there was niece whose name I do not know but who adopted a pair of orphans from Poland after the war who were the sole survivors of a relative. They had been saved by a Gentile woman who had claimed them as her own, raised them as Catholics in Holland, and had to give them up when Meyer’s relatives here wanted them. I remember when they came and how unhappy they were to have been separated from their “mother” in Holland. I don’t know what their names are (were) and don’t know what became of them. I believe Meyer sponsored their entry to the US.

The Chan Family originated in Canton, China. When the family migrated to Vietnam, they took Vietnamese names so as to blend in with their neighbors. The family came to the United States in 1981. The eldest brother preceded the family and settled in San Francisco, California. The rest of the family live in the San Gabriel Valley, east of Los Angeles, California. The surname reverted to “Chan” and English given names were adopted by most of the family.

The Chan Family is linked to the Semmels by way of the marriage of Melanie (nee Hao Chan) to Daniel Blustein on December 19, l987 in California. The couple met when Melanie and her sisters were attending an English language class taught by Danny.

Melanie’s mother, Huynh Xuong was born in Vietnam in 1921 and died there in November 1980, one month before the family was able to leave for Thailand in December and then, in January 1981 to the United States. Melanie’s father, Dieu Tran, born in Canton in 1919, emigrated to Vietnam in 1928 where he met and married Huynh Xuong. Together they had eleven children, ten of whom survived; one male, born in 1945,died in infancy.

The Chan Family now consists of Dieu Tran, his seven sons and their wives, three daughters, two of whom are married, and thirteen grandchildren.

My aunt Chaya Silberman was married to Muni Getter, who survived Auschwitz. Chaya was murdered at Auschwitz soon after she arrived. Both were French citizens living in Paris when they were rounded up. Their only child, my cousin Florine, was hidden in a convent in Grenoble at age12 and immigrated to the US after the war at age 18 and lived with us for about two years. My mothers brother, Isaac Metzger, who remained in Przemysl- also survived the war. He had a wife and two or three children whose names I do not know, but they were Shoah victims. My uncle returned to Przemysl after the war & died there sometime in the late 60’s or early 70’s.

My grandmother Chana Metzger did not immigrate to the US until after the First WW. My mother told many stories of survival during the various sieges of Prsemsyl- which changed hands between Austro-Hungary & the Russians several times. I estimate that family members immigrated at different times, from about 1918-19 to 1923.

By: Ev Blustein

Sala Sura Blusztajn ( Sala or Sara Blustein-Kimchi)

Sala was born August 7, 1917 in Radom, Poland. Her parents were Icek Mendel Blusztajn and Estera Lender. Her grandparents were Mordka Wolf Blusztajn and Cyna Wahnsztat (married in 1876) and Izrael Leib Lender and Tauba Gruszkiewicz. She was married and divorced from Moshe Kimchi.

Sala’s brothers and sisters who were killed in the Holcaust were: Shmuel (1919-1942), a carpenter, Bajla Pesa (1918-?), Rajzla Gitel (1921-?), a student, and Mojzesz ( 1923-1943), a student. Her mother, Ester, died in Treblinka 1, Camp in 1941.

In early Sept. 1939, the Germans bombed Radom, on Sept. 6, the Polish army withdrew and the Germans occupied Radom. On or about Sept. 1, Sala departed Radom on a transport organized by the Jewish Agency for Palestine aboard a Hagannah owned ship, the Tiger Hill. There were 800 aboard, including many children.

En route to Palestine, the Tiger Hill was contacted by another ship bearing 650 refugees from Czechoslovakia , a transport organized by a group of wealthy young men when the Germans marched into Prague on April 30,1939 and known as the Black Rose Transport. Beset by many problems, The Black Rose transport had had an arduous journey of 127 days and arranged for the transshipment of is passengers onto the Tiger Hill swelling the number aboard to 1417. The Tiger Hill reached Tel Aviv on Sept 3,1939 and were met by thousands of people assembled to help them escape imprisonment by the British who would not authorize a landing of refugees from Europe. Some from the ship were arrested and detained in camps but they were released shortly thereafter as World War II had begun. The Tiger Hill was the last ship to leave Poland before the horrors of the German occupation ; Sala was the only one in her family to escape.

In Palestine, Sala was instrumental in founding Kibbutz Mizra , near Afula in the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel. She married Moshe Kimchi (later divorced) and had three children there: Amir (1944), Joshua (1948) and Edna (1952). They live in Israel. Sala lived in Mizra until her death on October 1, 2004.

Marcus Semmel's Bar Mitzvoth Speech - 2001

Bar Mitzvoth speech given November 3, 2001 at Temple Sholom in Chicago:

The Test

Marcus R. Semmel

My Torah portion, from Genesis Chapter 22, reads, “And God did test Abraham, And he said to Abraham, here I am. And he said take your son, your favored one Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering. . .” The Torah states that God did test Abraham, but the nature of the test is not clear.

What first comes to mind is that this is only a test of Abraham’s unquestioned obedience to God, yet I do not believe that this is the true nature of the test. If God knew how we would act in all situations or we all just followed His instructions blindly, we would not have any freedom or responsibility. But God gave us free will, the option to choose right from wrong and with it, the ultimate responsibility for our actions.

So what was the test? One answer could be that by making such a harsh demand on him, God was testing Abraham’s most basic sense of right and wrong. We do not know what Abraham believed to be right. One can only imagine his horror at the prospect of having to kill his favorite son. Very likely he had an even stronger dread of the prospect of disobeying a direct commandment from God. In life, we are often faced with similar ‘no-win’ situations. Quite possibly God was challenging Abraham specifically, and the human race in general, to see how we come to make our own hard decisions and difficult choices.

I believe this was also a test of Abraham’s faith. He could only obey God’s commandment to sacrifice Isaac if he truly believed in God’s love and His omniscience. He had to believe that God loved him and his son, and that God ultimately knew and wanted what was best for them. Abraham had to have faith enough to believe that if he followed God’s instructions to sacrifice Isaac that somehow everything would be all right in the end. Abraham passed the test of faith, and everything did turn out for the best. God did not allow Isaac to be sacrificed and Abraham earned God’s faith.

And finally, could this be a test of Abraham as a father? I think that Abraham should have told Isaac of God’s commandment and trusted and respected Isaac’s opinions. As a parent, Abraham owed it to his son try to save Isaac. As a man, Abraham owed it to his fellow man to not kill an uninformed innocent in expressing his faith, especially not his own son. Since Abraham intended to sacrifice Isaac he owed an explanation to him, which he never gave. The Torah tells us that they traveled for days without speaking so Abraham had ample time to confide in Isaac, bond with him and trust in his son to share in the sacrifice decision. But he did not. So by passing the test of obedience Abraham failed the test of being a good father.

In my own day-to-day life, I am constantly faced with the choice of following the instructions of my parents and teachers or doing as I wish. In the past months I have been instructed to study my torah portion for about one hour each day. Personally, I felt that this was a bit too much. I believed that I could get by with a little less studying. However, I knew my parents had my best interests at heart. I had faith in my parents’ love for me, and complied with their wishes. Today, thanks to my faith, I stand here at the bimah as a Bar Mitzvah, confident in my abilities and grateful to my parents and teachers for their guidance.

The horrific terrorist attacks of recent weeks have brought on a test of faith on all levels, emotional, moral and spiritual. Now is the time when we all need to draw on this lesson from Torah to pass the tests of right and wrong, tests of father and motherhood and the test of faith in God.

Yes, the factory was in Prezmsl. It was a furniture factory. Mendel is the 5th from the left in the middle row of the group. I was told that the photo is of the workers in his fathers shop. I would guess that it was taken after the war some time between 1918 and 1921.

Mendel was an active member of the Jewish Workers Bund ( a socialist, non-communist union movement) and at one time, led the workers out in a strike. I do not know if it was a strike against his fathers factory or whether (as I think more likely), it was part of general strike.

This photo is of Mendel & some friends in Cuba. The 2nd man from the left is Harry Ente, Mendel is 3rd from left. I don’t know who the others are. Harry Ente & his family lived in the coops during the 40s &. They were not relatives, Harry was either a “landsman” (meaning from the same town) or a friend from Cuban days. The Ente’s had relatives in Sea Gate as we did (Aunt Mollie & Uncle Harry Metzger). Sea Gate was a gated community of large single family homes at the edge of Coney Island. I don’t know about Che & Fidel, but Mendel joined the party in Cuba and the once & future dictator, Fulgencio Batista ( the one Fidel overthrew), was a member of party at the time, probably in the same cell.

Note from David: The two other men in the photo are Dick Wilhelm, left, and Bernard Wolman.
